The infamous statue of Juliet. If you touch a "certain part" of her it is supposed to bring good fortune and luck in love. What will you do?

This is the infamous balcony in Verona. One would have to be pretty agile to make it up there.

The town is charming - I can see where it would be easy to fall in love here.

As we make our way to Venice we pass lots of grapes. Intermingled with the grapes are . . .

Roses! Apparently roses are susceptible to many of the unhealthy fungi that grapes are, and are more sensitive. So if they start failing, the growers know to treat the grapes.

We arrive at the outskirts of Venice and have to board a ferry to get to the city. As we approach, it looks like the whole city is under water, which in a sense it is.

Before you know it, we are off the boat and in St. Mark's square. St. Mark, the evangelist (the one thought to have written the gospel) is popular here - why?

In 828 the Christians in Venice sent two people to steal St. Mark's bones from Alexandria in Africa and they are now laid to rest here in a gold plated, beautiful church filled with mosaics.

Close to St. Mark's church is the jail where they kept prisoners. This is the "Bridge of Sighs" where prisoners would . . .

peek through to get one last glimpse of Venice before their fate was decided. Perhaps they saw a gondola much like . . .

this gondola! Yes, we get to go on a gondola ride.

It was lovely, however we missed the singing. Someone asked the gondolier about it and he replied, "You have been watching too many movies." Sigh.

Venice is indescribable. Because it is on a lagoon, there are no vehicles. For over 1000 years it was a very wealthy city because of the abundance of salt. (Salt in the day was like our oil is now). And it was a democracy. Not until Napoleon arrived did it succumb to outside influences.

One of the treasures of Venice is the glass blowing. We saw this gentlemen change this into . . .

this! In less than 5 minutes!

I had to chuckle when I spotted this unique glass piece. Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus in a gondola wearing Venetian masks. Very clever!

It's been a long day and before heading back we take a moment to relax in St. Marks square, enjoy the music, and watch the people go by.

It's time to not only say goodbye to Venice, but to Europe and our amazing guide Matteo who took such good care of us in Italy. Thank you for coming along. Until we meet again . . . Arrivederci!
