Our tour starts at the Vatican, where over 120 of the 200+ popes are buried. In the medieval age, the popes were mainly about power. All came from wealthy families. Some were good, some not so much.

On our way to the Sistine chapel, we pass this tapestry. The eyes of Jesus literally follow you as you pass by. It took 27 years to make and we can't duplicate that to this day. Unfortunately, no pics allowed in that chapel.

According to tradition, Peter was crucified upside down, and his bones, which were found in the 1950's are in the church named after him. (The church is part of the Vatican). There is a good chance they are his but they can't put it a 100 percent.

It is here in this Mammertime prison they believe Paul was held as he awaited his fate from Nero. In 67 AD, Nero sentenced him to death. Nero would die a year later.

Bound in chains like these, he was transferred to die outside the city.

Paul walks down the stairs, knowing his life will be over shortly.

They open the door and . . .

He enters the cell, knowing he is about to die. "The time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful." 2 Timothy 4:6

They wrap his arms around a pole like this, and then he is beheaded. (A Roman citizen could not be crucified). After, a wealthy woman pays for him to be buried less than 2 miles away.

He is laid to rest here, in the Basilica of St. Paul. That this houses his bones is indisputable.

Before we leave, I want to share with you Michelangelo's last chapel he designed at 86. It's my favorite. It exudes Christ's love.

The colors are so warm, soft and inviting. So unlike many of the other churches.

And there on the ceiling is Jesus washing his disciples feet, and a cherub holding the cross. He died just 3 years later at 89. He was so disgusted with the corruption at the Vatican he had his nephew smuggle his corpse out.

We can't leave Roma without tasting some pizza. Let's eat while it's still hot. And then "Now i lay ME down to sleep . . . "
